Asiedu Nketia Backs EC

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC,) Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has jumped to defense of the Electoral Commission (EC) saying it is not a useless organisation despite its past mistakes.

The EC has been widely criticised by many Ghanaians after some major stakeholders pointed out some loopholes in its recent registration exercise.

The EC was compelled to call off the exercise after it emerged they had not fully complied with the constitutional requirements for the registration process.

Aside from this challenge, many Ghanaians have heavily condemned the Commission for wasting GHC300 million on botched elections.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Nketia admitted that though the EC had made “a few mistakes”, he will be “hesitant in concluding” that it had become a “totally useless organisation that should be scrapped or handled in a certain way.”

He further downplayed calls for EC officials to be prosecuted, describing such calls as baseless.

“I don’t have any basis to be mentioning individuals’ names for punishment. I accept that they were mistakes done by the Commission but the blame is to the Commission.

“I don’t attend meetings with them, and I don’t know who caused the mistakes. I don’t know if it was the whole Commission or an individual as some people are trying to claim so why should I be calling for the heads of some individuals when I don’t have that basis,:” he argued.

He also suggested that EC officials who had made some mistakes in the past should be corrected according to the Constitution.
