Minister Shows His Hands! In Plan To Split VRA Into Two Companies

Dr. Kwabena Donkor, Minister of Power has confirmed his direct involvement in the strange attempt to split the Volta River Authority (VRA) into two separate companies.

In a reaction to newspaper reports on the subject, Dr. Donkor claimed that the restructuring of the VRA has been on the drawing board for a long time.

According to the Minister he only came “to breathe life into it”.

Dr. Donkor had earlier inaugurated an eight member committee with Dr. Charles Yves Wereko-Brobby, a former Chief Executive of the VRA as its advisor.

Workers and managers of the VRA have kicked against the move claiming that it will be a waste of resources.

They contend that the VRA has all the experts on both hydro and thermal generation to be able to carry out its lawful functions.

Some stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also expressed shock over the appointment of Dr. Wereko-Brobbey as an advisor to the committee restructuring the VRA.

Dr. Donkor drew the president right into the controversy.

He said “the president in his State of the Nation Address this year hinted of plans to restructure VRA; and that is what I am breathing life into.”

Promises by the Minister to improve the power supply situation by the end of April did not materialize.
