Accra Floods: Mad Herbert Mensah Shed Tears"Enough Is Enough"

Businessman and former football administrator, Herbert Amponsah Mensah has said he is “mad” for the reason that authorities have disregarded measures that will help curb flooding in Accra over the years.

According to him, past and present governments have failed to achieve their aim to at least put an end to Accra flooding which happens perennially.

Herbert Mensah admitted that he was saddened by the news of the flooding and fuel explosion which killed over 150 whiles on a business trip in South Africa – “A grown man shedding a tear”.

“I am sad, I am mad and I am enraged because year after year we get promises. Promises that after the next raining season we’ll do X and Y….and it transient governments. Previous government has done it and it comes to this time of the year of the rains, people get flooded, children die, mothers die , the poor suffer and we were told that monies will be released next year…storm drains will be built and we won’t go through this.

“…Then the following year it happens again. Enough is enough, I am tired of it, aren’t you all tired? I am sicken by it,” he bemoaned.

The heavy downpour Wednesday in the capital rendered several places flooded and also led to power outages in several communities.

Many properties were lost to the floods while countless number of homes in many parts of Accra got flooded with commuters left stranded as most roads became almost impassable.

The filling station, close to the main Nkrumah Circle branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank, was completely razed down in an explosion that lasted several hours during rains.

The fire, which started some few minutes past 10pm, spread to nearby structures where people were seeking shelter killing at least 150 with several others injured.

In a video message posted on facebook and available to Peacefmonline.com, the President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union [GRFU] charged politicians to take up responsibility for their action because they have voted into power to effect change.

“Politicians must just get off the iron rods. Stop taking it personally and accept the sense of responsibility for which you are voted in power. It happened in the previous government and happened in the government before that. But when life is lost…let alone a hundred lives, it could have been prevented. It is simply not acceptable and I am not happy…I am not happy at all,” he said.

“We need to standup and ask who is responsible and whoever is responsible from the bottom to the very top must take responsibility. Whether you own a filling station… are you responsible? Or who is it within governments is responsible ultimately for this in taking control of affairs. Enough is enough,” he added.
