The three-day national mourning declared by government in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives in the floods and fire disaster in Accra begins today, Monday, 8th June, 2015.

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Communication, speaking in an interview on Monday said all flags should fly at half-mast from today.

“Even if the flags are on the table, it should be put on half-mast,” he said and urged that people on various media outlets especially social media should stop circulating the pictures of those who died in the disaster.

A statement signed by the Minister on Sunday also urged Ghanaians and the general public to wear black or red arm bands and clothing to mourn with the families of the victims of the disaster.

“The 3 days of mourning will end on Wednesday June 10 with a memorial service for the departed near the site of the fire disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama”, the statement said and added, “As we go about our work and other duties during the 3 days, let us remember the victims and pray for their souls and pray for strength and comfort for their families and friends,” the statement added. The country experienced a devastating flood and fire disaster on Wednesday 3rd June, 2015 evening which claimed almost 200 lives, destroyed properties running into millions of cedis and brought many businesses to a standstill on Thursday June 4, 2015.
