Men Who Encourage Women Should Be Appreciated

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Dzifa Gomashie has commended men who appreciate women and encourage them to achieve their goals in life.

She made the statement at a ceremony when she, together with Ghana’s Country Director for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), Mr Girmay Haile, hosted the UNAIDS Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Director, Professor Sheila Tlou to a dinner in Accra.

Prof. Tlou, who is also a former Minister of Health in Botswana, was in the country to attend the fourth Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders from Africa and of African Descent (GAMLAAD) conference held in Accra from June 1 to 3, 2015.

The summit was attended by the Global Alliance Executive Committee and African Renaissance and Diaspora Network members, mayors, leaders from Africa and of African descent.

The dinner brought together eminent women personalities including lawyers, artists and businesswomen, who are working in areas of mentoring and empowering women, towards the attainment of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a visionary agenda for the empowerment of women.

It was also graced by the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor, Host of Greeting from Abroad, Ms Gifty Anti, Hostess of StandPoint, a television show on women empowerment and songstress Rebecca Acheampong (Becca).

Talented people
Madam Gomashie who also dedicated the evening to Mr Haile and was full of praise for him, said he has helped to simplify issues on HIV and AIDS in the country.

She said through the work of the Country Director, a lot of people both young and old were working together to help halt the spread of the disease in the country.

Mr Haile who earlier introduced all personalities present to Prof Tlou, said the country had a lot of talented people including women, but there was the need to bring them together before they could make the desired impact.

He said for the country to benefit from the individual talents of people there was the need for them to come together and work as a team.

According to him, other countries are not as fortunate as Ghana to have a crop of talented people but they have still managed to achieve global recognition and therefore it was time for Ghana to recognise its talents and benefit from them.

Prof. Tlou in an address said the world was now a better place as more young women have taken up the issue of gender equality.

Recounting the days of the Beijing Conference in 1995, she said it was heartwarming that there were young crop of women who were ensuring that they kept the Beijing dream alive.

She dedicated all her achievements to young women and women achievers saying that she could not have achieved them alone.
