President John Dramani Mahama yesterday received the final report of the committee set up to plan the establishment of a public university in the Eastern Region and promised that the government would raise the necessary funds to start the project.

"We are waiting for Parliament to pass the appropriate legislation so that we can move the next step of setting up infrastructure facilities and the faculties," he indicated.
The University for Sustainable Environmental Studies and Applied Research will have the main campus in Somanya, with a satellite campus at Donkorkrom

Currently, the bill for the establishment of the university is before Parliament, having gone through the second reading.
The 12-member planning committee, chaired by Professor Raymond Beining, was set up in April 2013 to bring to fruition the President's vision to establish a new public university in the Eastern Region.

Specialised universities
President Mahama expressed concern over the fact that most of the country's universities were offering courses mainly in the Humanities.

That, he said, explained why the last two public universities in Sunyani and Ho, as well as the one to be established in Somanya, were specialised institutions.
The President commended the committee for a good work done.

Convener
The convener of the committee, Dr Christina Amoako-Nuamah, presented the two-part document to the President.
The first part contained recommendations on what was expected to bring the project to fruition, while the second part provided a blueprint for the running of the university.

She said the committee proposed that the university start with four undergraduate schools and one graduate school, as well as three centres of excellence.
