Floods: Kufuor tackles Engineers, Planners

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has charged Institute of Planners, Architects and Engineers in the country to play a crucial role in the planning of the capital city.

He indicated that if these development agents had done their work diligently, the torrential rains that claimed many lives and destroyed property could have been avoided.

Former President Kufuor made the comment at the launch of June 3 Fund spearheaded by Dr. Zenator Rawlings, daughter of President Jerry John Rawlings, to raise funds to support the victims of last Wednesday’s disaster.

Ghana recorded its deadliest flood disaster last Wednesday, June 3, when the city got flooded and a fire explosion occurred at the Goil fuel station near Kwame Nkrumah circle.

As of last Friday, 150 dead bodies had been found. At the close of the search and rescue efforts which ended at 6 p.m. Sunday, 10 more bodies had been found.

The government has allocated GHC50 million disaster fund to cover relief and humanitarian operations, detailing and clearing of water courses and repair of infrastructure.

But Mr. Kufuor believes if Planners, Architects and Engineers put pressure on government to do the right things, such disasters could be avoided in future. Meanwhile, Dr Zenator Rawlings called on government to follow the master plan of the country to avert future occurrence of such disasters.
