Three persons have been arrested in separate incidents for illegal possession of weapons in Accra. In the first incident, George Boateng, 35 and Eric Adjei Bawuah, 34, were arrested on Saturday July 25, 2009, at the Tantra Night Club, Osu for illegally possessing a foreign pistol. According to the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Bio Atingah, Bawuah reported to a police/military patrol team that his friend Boateng had hit his mouth with a heavy blow that left him with a cut over a scuffle they had at the club. When the team arrived at the spot to arrest Boateng, Bawuah further alleged that Boateng had a gun in his car. Boateng denied the report but when his car was searched, the gun was found. Boateng further denied knowledge of the said gun so the two were arrested. However, when they were brought to the Regional Police Headquarters, Boateng admitted he had brought the unlicensed gun from abroad. The police boss did indicate that since a permit was not granted by the Interior Minister before the said gun was brought into the country, the gun had been smuggled. The two were arraigned before a magistrate court and had since been granted bail. In the second incident, the Commander of Striking Force, DSP John Osei Bonsu, said one Kwame Gyan, 26, was arrested on Wednesday July 29, 2009, at about 1:30am while he was walking towards Kasoa. When Kwame Gyan, who claimed he hails from Sunkwa near Mankessim, was searched, the police fund on him a locally manufactured pistol. Meanwhile, Gyan had told the police that he chanced upon the pistol at Ashaiman where he picked it up so as to report to the police but failed to do so. He would soon be arraigned before court when investigations were completed.
