Give Us Space To Operate - Ga Chief Tells Govt

Some chiefs in the Greater Accra Region are not happy about the filthy state of the region as a result, they are asking the government to let them take charge in the management of the environment and get the power to sanction anyone who will go contrary to the sanitation rules and regulations.

Briefing the press, Chief of Ngleshie Amanfrom, Nii Kwashie Gborlor reminded Ghanaians that in the olden days when the chiefs were fully involved in the running of the state and had the power to sanction those unsocial people, the region was very neat.

He noted that the best way government can instill discipline and ensure that the laws of the land works is to give the environment sector to the traditional rulers to manage and to control, explaining “environmental and sanitation sector should be vested in the hands of the chiefs and it is through that, that this country will be free from sanitation challenges.”

He asserted that government is in dilemma; not knowing what to do because “we have made our system of government in such a way that it is a political party that forms a government, so as the government is thinking of how to implement the laws to shape the behavior of the citizens, it is at the same time thinking of how those actions will not result in losing the next election.

“Until much power is given to the chiefs to sanitize the system, this country will always face sanitation and environmental challenges because to the politicians, they always think of how to win the next election so they will never take any action that will hamper their fortunes of wining an election even if it is the right one, but as for the chiefs, our mandate is not through poll or voting so we can take critical decisions that will inure to the benefit of the masses”, he claimed.

Nii e Gborlor was briefing the press in relation to the gory incident that happened a couple of days ago of which over two hundred people lost their lives as a result of spillage of petrol during the torrential rains.

Nii Gbolor two days before the incident happened warned Accra Mayor, Oko Vanderpuije to do something about the sanitation issues in the metropolis else something disastrous would happen and lo and behold it indeed happened.

The chief is not in bed with those who are calling for the resignation of Accra Mayor though, but he has advised him to assess his performance over the past years and see if indeed he deserved to be an Accra Mayor for the years ahead looking at what had just happened.
