Hydrologists of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing have said the season of floods in the capital is not over yet. The experts said though the rainfall in Accra yesterday was not as heavy as that of June 3rd, continuous precipitation on the mountain ranges was still bringing a lot of water into the city.
Floods were recorded in Weija, parts of Mamprusi, and along the Kasoa road.
One death was recorded in James Town. A person believed to be drunk fell into the drain and was washed away by the fast flowing water.
The drainage experts commended the President for his directive to carry out a comprehensive dredging of the Korle Lagoon and desilting of all the primary and secondary drains. They said this will greatly help the situation.
They said the dredging and desilting works will take about 6 months to complete and are not likely to prevent the flooding this year. The effects would be better felt next year.
The dredging of the Korle Lagoon and desilting of the Odaw and Kaneshie drains began in earnest last week. President Mahama was at the site to witness the ongoing work. Plastic items, pieces of wood, old mattresses, discarded furniture, and even old vehicles were some of the junk being cleared from the lagoon which serves as a major drain for the city.
