The Ashanti Regional Police Commander (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye has launched a special police operation to clamp down on mob actions targeted at government institutions including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in Kumasi.
He said the move was meant to protect the institutions and save the state huge sums of money that otherwise would be spent on rehabilitation works.
The regional police commander made this known at the inauguration of a police station at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He said, “The police will react with the appropriate force to any group bent on causing mayhem.”
He noted that without law and order, society would be chaotic and would eventually crumble.
The police station has five rooms. These are male and female cells, a charge office, stations officer’s office and an office for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). In addition, there are two washrooms.
The KATH police station brings to 12 the number of newly established stations in Kumasi in addition to eight others inaugurated in the district this year.
DCOP Kofi Boakye has given an assurance that the police will enforce rules and regulations governing the society strictly and promised to be accountable and fair to all.
He said policing was a shared responsibility and as such called for a deepening of the relationship between the police and the public.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KATH, Dr Joseph Akpaloo, was happy with the facility provided as it would provide security for staff, patients and guests of the hospital, as well as curb frequent pilfering and use of the hospital as a thoroughfare.
He said the security department of the hospital was faced with many challenges ranging from theft, abscondment of patients, billing fraud, impersonation and unwarranted attacks on staff; all of which were beyond the capacity of the department.
The CEO was hopeful that with the police now on the hospital premises, they would respond promptly to cases reported to them.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Peter Anarfi-Mensah, promised to donate two motorbikes to the new police station to facilitate the work of the officers.
