Authorities of the Ahmadiyya Mission Hospital in Daboase in the Wassa East District of the Western Region have openly declared that the indebtedness of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to the hospital is having a crippling effect on their operations.

The administrator of the hospital, Nelson Agbesi, who spoke on behalf of management to The Finder in an exclusive interview, said since January 2015, the NHIA has not settled the debts owed the hospital.

“The situation is becoming unbearable. In the past, we were able to manage; but with the additional burden of fuelling our generators in view of the ‘dumsor’ crisis, everything is getting out of hand.

“We, therefore, urgently appeal to the authorities at the NHIA to put their act together to avoid a situation where we would be forced to turn away NHIA card bearers,” he stressed.

Mr Agbesi said although the situation remains difficult, the hospital continues to attend to health insurance card bearers in the district and beyond.

He, however, cautioned that if the situation does not improve, it could affect the payment of staff salaries and the purchase of drugs for the hospital.

He said without funding, the operations and management of the hospital will grind to a halt, and urged the National Health Insurance Authority to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
