CODEO Welcomes New EC Boss Appointment

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has welcomed the appointment of the new head for the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei.

The Coalition said it has noted with appreciation the welcoming reception that the public and the political parties have given to the new appointment.

“The Coalition congratulates Mrs Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei on her appointment to head Ghana's Electoral Commission,” CODEO said in a statement jointly signed by its chairs, Professor Miranda Greentstreet and Justice VCRAC Crabbe and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday.

The Coalition, however, reminded the new EC boss to consider those goodwill gestures from the public as a call to duty and wished that she approached her work with utmost professionalism, team work and neutrality at all times.

It also urged the new Chairperson to work hard to help enhance public trust and confidence in the Commission.

The statement said: “CODEO hopes that Mrs Osei continues from where Dr Afari-Gyan left off and pursues the needed administrative and electoral reforms.”

It also expressed the hope that Mrs Osei would work hard to strengthen the internal structures of the Commission to make it more effective.

CODEO expressed its commitment to continue to offer its fullest support and cooperation to Mrs Osei and the Commission to improve on the integrity and credibility of Ghana’s elections as it had done during the tenure of Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.

The coalition commended the former EC Chairman for his immense contribution to the management of elections in Ghana and Africa.

It urged the political parties, the media and all stakeholders in elections to work with the new chairperson to ensure that Ghana’s electoral process is enhanced.
