Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini has indicated that only 20% of roads in Ghana are deplorable.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Minister explained that generally, “about 50% of our roads are in good condition; about 30% are in fair condition and about 20% are in poor condition.

Since the onset of the rainy season about two months ago, complaints about the state of roads, drainage system and some bridges have increased with many Ghanaians accusing the government of neglect.

According to the Roads Minister, Ghanaians can be rest assured that all these roads will be fixed soon.

He mentioned the Gh¢ 50 million the President announced had been allocated for the fixing of roads and taking care of flood victims after the June 3 floods and fire incident in Accra.

Alhaji Fuseini clarified that out of this amount, Gh¢ 10 million will go to flood victims; another Gh¢ 10 million will be used to desilt the drains while the remaining Gh¢ 30 million will be used to repair roads and bridges that have been destroyed.

He said at the moment, his Ministry has “identified some roads which will benefit from a major intervention to solve whatever damage has been caused by the excessive rainfalls.”

The sector Minister added that there is money to undertake these repair works because the Minister of Finance during the reading of the budget last year had the foresight and established the Contingency Fund by setting aside Gh¢50 million.

Alhaji Fuseini admittedly the money is not enough to rehabilitate all the damaged roads, but he was quick to add that aside relying on the emergency funds, government is in talks with development partners “who are sympathetic to what is happening to us and are willing to partner us to rehabilitate these infrastructure and God willing, these interventions will yield fruitful results for all to see.”
