The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), is warning members of the public to desist from patronizing a counterfeit dewormer brand, Vermox, which according to the regulator, has hit town and put on sale in most pharmacies and drug stores across the country.
A statement issued over the weekend and signed by the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hudu Mogtari, disclosed that the FDA, through its Post Market Surveillance with support from the sole authorization holder of the original Vermox tablets, detected batches of the fake products in some shops, hence the alert to the general public to be wary.
The Authority named, Jassen Cilag, as the market authorization holder of Vermox tablets, and mentioned regions such as the Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Western as most affected.
It gave a list of names of shops and areas, where these fake vermox tablets, have been put out for sale.
The FDA said, it analysis and tests showed that the batches contained no active ingredients which can make it potent for the fight against worms.
It not clear who imported these fake products into the country to dupe innocent Ghanaians.
Hudu Mogtari’s statement insists, “Findings through laboratory analysis have revealed that the said batches contain no active ingredients”.
The statement cataloged the counterfeit vermox tablets as follows; DALOX00, CIL8J01, DBL4G01, DHL2Z00 and BU1V01.
It advised pharmacies, licensed chemical shops, hospitals, clinics and all other health facilities, having stocks of Vermox with the above mentioned batch numbers to immediately handover the products to any of the FDA offices countrywide for destruction.
“Furthermore, the general public, especially Pharmacies, Chemical Shops, Hospitals and Clinics and other Healthcare Facilities are hereby cautioned against buying medicines from drug peddlers and other dubious sources. Medicines purchased from these sources could be fake/counterfeit.
