Gregory Afoko, one of the two accused persons standing trial over the murder of Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that he is sick.
The accused, aged 50, who is the brother of the NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko, yesterday told the Accra Central magistrate court that he had been unwell since he was remanded into the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) by the court.
Although he was unable to tell the court, presided over by Worlanyo Kotoku, what exactly was wrong with him, his lawyers wanted the court to grant Afoko bail pending the determination of the case.
Gregory and Issah Musah, a driver, are before the court for allegedly intentionally and unlawfully causing the death of Adams on May 20, 2015 at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
According to the police, Issah, who is a member of the NPP, on 19 May, 2015, solicited and procured deadly acid which he gave to other two suspects who in turn poured it on Adams, leading to his death.
Asabke Alangdi, the third accused, has been on the run together with his wife, leaving behind their one-and-a-half-year-old baby.
Gregory is facing charges of conspiracy and murder while Isaah has been slapped with abetment.
The plea of the two has not been taken.
At the hearing of the case yesterday, the trial magistrate adjourned hearing at the instance of the prosecutor, Supt. Francis Baah, who was not in court and was represented by Chief Inspector Salifu Sanche.
Briggette Ampadu, counsel for Gregory Afoko, prayed the court to deliver its ruling on the bail application but Mr. Kotoku said the said ruling was not ready and asked the defence to return on July 10, 2015, by which time it would have been ready.
Offered the opportunity to tell the court his problems if any, Issah said he did not like the food he was given in custody.
But the investigator in the case, in a quick rebuttal, said Issah was fed by his family and not the remand institution.
In the case of Afoko’s ill-health, the investigator said he was shocked the accused was complaining about his health in court when he had not ever raised the issue.
Mr. Kotoku nonetheless, ordered the investigator to take ‘sick Afoko’ to hospital.
