An Accra circuit court has set Monday, July 13, 2015 for the judgement in a case in which a mason has been charged for possessing firearms without authority.
The convict, Abotsi Yohanes, is said to have been caught with the weapon on July 6, 2015 at Abokobi, a suburb of Accra, but he claimed he found it in a bush.
Yohanes is facing an additional charge of intentionally and unlawfully causing damage to a 90-meter wall belonging to Nana Oteng Korankye II, chief of Brekuso.
Making his first appearance in the court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri, Yohanes admitted the offence of possessing firearm without authority and denied the charge of causing damage.
The trial judge accordingly convicted the accused on his own plea of guilty and deferred the sentence until Monday for the investigator, D/Sgt Seth Amediku, to find out whether or not the convict has a criminal record.
Justice Obiri also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Samuel Akugre, the second accused person in the case, who was not in court yesterday.
The prosecution, led by ACP Moses Atibilla, told the court that the two accused persons are mason and operations officer respectively and that Nana Korankye has parcels of land at Abokobi on which he recently constructed a fence wall.
He said in June this year, Samuel met Yohanes and asked him to demolish the said fence wall, adding that on June 13, 2015, Yohanes, who is close to the site, went and demolished part of the wall.
ACP Atibilla stated that the case was reported to the police and whilst the case was under investigation, Yohanes went to demolish the rest of the fence wall.
The senior police officer said on July 3, 2015, Yohanes was arrested and when his house was searched, a single barrel gun was found but Yohanes could not tell the police how he got it.
ACP Atibilla said the convict, in his caution statement, told the police that he found the said gun in the bush.
