Pope Francis Invites Dr. Okoe Vanderpuije

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, is set to speak at two conferences at the Casina Pio IV in the Vatican.

The two conferences – dubbed ‘Modern Slavery and climate Change – the Commitment of the Cities’ and the ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network – People and Planet: Achieving Sustainable Development in our Cities’ – are slated for July 21, 2015 and July 22, 2015 respectively.

Dr. Vanderpuije’s landmark invitations are at the instance of the pontifical Academy of Science and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network headed by professor Jeffery Sachs at the Vatican.
These events would bring together over 80 mayors of the world and local government leaders, as well as other urban development practitioners to consider how cities can derive the implementation of the three new sustainable development agenda of empowering people, eradicating poverty and protecting human dignity and shared prosperity.

Dr. Vanderpuije, who would lead mayors from Africa and of African Descents and the good people of the Millennium City of Accra during the conferences, will have the opportunity to share his commitment in the provision of quality education, which ultimately empower the citizenry, and his drive for excellence in all endeavours with his Holiness Pope Francis.

This will also be a preamble to the General Debate on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by his Holiness Pope Francis at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September to adopt the post-2015 SDGs by all Concerned City Authorities.
