Six Cable Thieves Busted

Ga West Police command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested six (6) men for separate counts of stealing and unlawfully receiving stolen Vodafone cable wires.

According to the police, the cables were stolen on the 13th of July 2013 from the Dansoman sub-station of Vodafone Company.

Three of the six were alleged to be robbers, while the remaining three were charged with unlawful receiving of stolen items.

The alleged robbers, the police told the media in Accra on Monday, July 13, 2015 were Dickson Boateng, a 41-year-old engineer of Vodafone Company, Kwasi Boateng, 38 and Yeboah Alfred, 31, both contractors of the telecom company.

The other three, Charles Coffie, Kwame Adu and Kwadjo Appiah who were scrap dealers bought the stolen cable wires from the suspects.

Narrating the incident, the District Police Commander of Ga West Municipal area, DSP Elvis Bawa Sadongo, revealed that at about 8:30A.M., on July 9, 2015 his outfit received a call from a retired police officer living at Korleman, a suburb under the Ga West District, that there was an unusual thick smoke emanating from a place in the vicinity.

According to DSP Sadongo, the retired police officer then gathered some young men in the area and waited until the rising thick smoke ceased altogether.

DSP Sadongo continued that they then positioned themselves along the main road out of the vicinity.

After a while, he said, a rental Kia truck got to where the retired policeman and the young men had positioned themselves.

The Police Commander said, the young men immediately stopped the truck and forced the driver to pull off the tarpaulin which was covering the back of the truck.

And to their surprise DSP Sadongo said, they saw dirty copper wires supposed to be Vodafone cables.

DSP Sadongo stated that when the retired policeman started interrogating the driver, the latter’s responses aroused the retired policeman’s suspicion so he called the police.

And when the Vodafone officials were also called to the station, the police commander said, they confirmed that their wires had been stolen, and estimated the damaged cables at the cost of GHC44, 640.00.

Meanwhile, the police commander said, their investigation has revealed that Dickson Boateng and his two accomplices had apparently negotiated and settled on selling the stolen cables at GHC8,000.00 to the scrap dealers.

The scrap dealers, the police revealed, made an initial part payment of GHC5, 000.00, and to pay the balance after the final consignment had been delivered to them.

And as at the time of filing this report, the six robbers were in the custody of the Amasaman Police awaiting their first appearance before the court.
