Your Prayers are Helping the Economy Veep

The Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has commended Ghanaians for their sustained patience and continuous prayers which he said were influential in the turnaround of the country’s economic fortunes.

“The sacrifices, patience and prayers are producing the expected results,” he told the hundreds of Muslims who gathered at the Independence Square to mark the end of the Ramadan.

The Vice President in his address acknowledged that due to the many challenges facing the economy, the Mahama-led government has been forced to implement some difficult measures.

This, he said is to ensure the nation overcome the challenges as quickly as possible because “government is concerned about the long-term viability of our economy and its ability to provide assured livelihoods for our citizens.”

Mr. Amissah-Arthur observed that these difficult measures are already yielding some positive results.

“This year, we are experiencing an improvement in economic circumstance,” he said, adding that, the government is “confident that the programmes, projects and the measures we are implementing will continue to yield good results.”

On the issue of sanitation, the Vice President called for discipline among Ghanaians to end the annual flooding situation in the capital and other parts of the country.

He recounted that “early last month, Accra and other towns suffered from the effects of devastating floods after two days of torrential rains. Over 100 of our citizens lost their lives, many people were rendered homeless and businesses suffered losses.”

According to him, many experts have concluded that the June 3 flooding and fire incident “was the effect of our collective failure to treat the environment with respect.”

“As we put in place measures to deal with the problem, we need to resolve as a country to introduce discipline in our waste management practices and in the construction of buildings in water ways,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu has indicated that the June 3 disaster should be a wakeup call for the Muslim community as well as every citizen to respect to all bye laws on sanitation to avert a similar occurrence in the future.
