Were Under Emotional Stress Striking Nurses

Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have declared an indefinite strike action to press home their demand for government to pay their salaries which have been in arrears for some time now.

The nurses say government’s action is putting them under undue emotional stress, making it practically impossible for them to attend to others with similar psychological problems.

“We are supposed to be attending to people with mental challenges, but how can we do that effectively if we are put in this kind of emotional stress?” queried Eugene Amponsah, spokesperson for the striking nurses.

The nurses say all efforts to get government to pay their salary arrears have proven futile and that they have no other option but to “speak the language that government understands best.”

Eugene Amponsah told The Finder they have exhausted all diplomatic means to engage government on the matter, and that government was only paying lip service to their concerns.

He explained that nurses who were employed as far back as June 2013, September 2013, April 2014 and June 2014 all have their salary arrears unpaid by the government.

As a result, they have declared a sit down strike until all their salary arrears are paid.

Chief psychiatrist, Dr Akwesi Osei told The Finder he was engaging with the striking nurses and the Ministry of Health to resolve the matter.
