Police Boss Declares War On Land Guards

The Newly appointed Police Commander of the Kokrobite District of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Supt of Police, George Lysander Asare has declared war on criminals and land guards terrorizing residents in the community.

ASP Asare said there is no word like land guard in the constitution of Ghana and therefore it is criminal to engage in such activities, adding that land guards are breeds of armed robbers in society.

According to him, criminals and land guards are social liabilities and are not needed because after being paid by their employers to guard the lands, they invariably turn back and reclaim the lands from their paymasters and re-sell which is criminal.
“We don’t need them, land guard job is not going to be a lucrative job for them, it is criminal and the laws frown on it. They should go and find different work to do, if not we are going to descend heavily on them,” he said.

The police boss made these revelations over the weekend at Kokrobite after the chiefs and people donated two plots of land for the construction of a district police headquarters following the elevation of the Kokrobite police post to a district status.
Speaking to DAILY HERITAGE, Mr. Asare said Kokrobite used to be a police post, but due to increasing number of armed robbery cases, protracted land guards and chieftaincy issues, the Police Service deem it fit to elevate the post to a district status to ensure peace and security in the area.

“As a new commander, we have had series of meetings with the various identifiable groups in the area and have identified some of the challenges and problems while my men have also assured me of their support to flush out criminals and land guards in the community,” he stated.

He revealed that due to increasing number of chieftaincy and protracted land litigations, all the identifiable groups have formed land guard groups and on daily basis terrorize innocent people, but had warned the various leaders in charge of these groups to stop or the law will deal with them.

On his part, the Regional Police Commander of the Greater Accra Police Command, DCOP Christian Teteth Yohunu said the police administration will give the needed support, adding that documents involving the construction have been handed over to the Inspector General of Police for work to begin.

He said Kokrobite is one of the areas in the capital where tourists are trooping in for accommodation which simply means their security must be ensured and appealed to residents, individuals, non-governmental organizations to make property available to accommodate the officers who will be posted to the area.

The Dzaasetse of Kokrobite, Nii Arde Ansah said the chiefs gave out the land to ensure that the security of the people is ensured due to lingering chieftaincy issues and activities of land guards in the community.

Nii Ansah, therefore, appealed to the government, Non-Governmental Organizations and the Ghana Water Company to provide them with potable drinking water and toilet facility in the area.
