The Old Vandals Association (OVA) of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana has appealed to the membership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to call off their strike and return to work.

“The membership of OVA notes with regret the current standoff between the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Medical Association over the negotiation of your conditions of service and its attendant consequences,” a statement jointly signed by the National President and the National Secretary, Messrs Isaac N. Sarpong and Joseph Arhinful Biney, respectively and issued in Accra yesterday, said.

Concerns

The statement said OVA was disturbed by various heart-breaking media reports on the hardships the sick and expectant mothers had to grapple with over the last few days.

It said OVA was also worried about the untold hardships that would be visited upon the ordinary Ghanaian if the GMA carried its threat of mass resignation today into action.

“It does not lie in the mouth of OVA to say who is right and who is wrong. The GMA may be right. The GMA may be wrong. This is for the other competent bodies to judge,” the statement said.
Values

It said as an organisation with ‘altruism’ as one of its cherished values — a value equally shared by the GMA, OVA was committed to assisting the poor, the needy and the destitute in whatever way or form.

“It is in this light that all the members of OVA come before you on our knees with this appeal.

“It is our fervent hope that you will return to work without further delay while negotiations continue,” the statement concluded.
