The Ashanti regional chairman of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Frank Ankobea has revealed why the striking doctors failed to tender in their resignation letters as has been expected. Dr. Frank Ankobeah speaking on Asempa Friday said, they failed to resign en masse because of the various appeals from several opinion leaders in the country.

"We failed to resign en masse because we took into consideration the various appeals from the people like chiefs, religious leaders and other opinion leaders...," he said.

Members of GMA failed to resign en masse and have decided to continue with their strike after a crucial meeting in Accra on Friday.

The public sector doctors threatened to resign en masse on Friday, 14th August, 2015 if government failed to yield to their demands for a condition of service.

But after a three-hour meeting Friday, the doctors decided to continue with their strike and review their decision in two weeks if their conditions of service are still not met.

According to him, government has taken doctors in the country for granted for so long and will not allow any official from the government to intimidate them as they demand their conditions of service.

Despite offering the appeals from the opinion leaders as a reason for they not resigning, the Ashanti Regional GMA chairman said he would not be surprised to see individual members of the group resign from now.

“I will not be surprised if individual doctors begin to resign on their own. What we are demanding is our conditions of service but it looks like government is not committed...,” he said.

Dr. Frank Ankobeah added that the GMA would not disclose their next line of action insisting that 'when we get to the river, we shall surely cross it'.

“We just pray and hope to go back to work after negotiations have been resolved but if that is not done, then I’m scared to say that some individual doctors will be forced to resign,” he stated.
