The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Ade Coker has stated that government cannot be blamed for the deaths that have occurred as a result of the strike by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).
�Government cannot accept responsibility for people who are dying,� he said.
According to him, the situation should rather be blamed on the action of the doctors whom he described as playing �god.�
Doctors working in public hospitals are currently on strike after negotiations for codified conditions of service broke down.
The doctors have also been reportedly angered by presidential Staffer, Stan Dogbe for the leakage of the proposed conditions of service.
But speaking on the Big Issue, Mr. Ade Coker discounted such claims stating that the government machinery should be blamed for the strike.
�Any labour demand must be published so that all of us will know, and that is my opinion�the government own must be publicized likewise that of workers, when the government was under pressure to pay the doctors on the conditions of service, it was because nobody knew about the demands of the doctors,� he said.
He also dismissed calls for the suspension of Mr. Stan Dogbe.
Mr. Coker backed comments made by some loyalists of the NDC suggesting that the doctors were insensitive.
�I was the first to make a comment; I will never shy away from it�It�s come to a time in our lives in this country that we should call a spade a spade and be bold to speak our minds because we are all individuals. I�m saying that the politics is not necessary but the moral grounds, we spoke that way because people are dying,� he stated.
The GMA at its General Assembly meeting on Friday extended the strike by two weeks.
This is also expected to take a heavy toll on the already burdened security and some private health institutions across the country.
