Ghanas Sports Journalists Colonised By European Football Nyantakyi

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has blamed the lack of interest in the local league on sports journalists and their over-concentration on European football.

According to Nyantakyi, who was speaking after his re-election on Tuesday, Ghanaian sports journalists give a lot of coverage to European football and that has turned the heads of fans away from the local game leading to poor attendances at the various league centres.

In 2011, attendances at the grounds was a challenge and the situation will remain so for some time because the European League have now taken over our media space. Ghanaian sports journalists and the fans have been colonised by the European leagues and so, the interest is more on those than African football. This will continue unless we all turn a new leaf and pay more attention to the domestic league.

The state of the local league has been a worry for fans, observers and journalists and it seems Nyantakyi wants to improve matters by getting more work done in the area of marketing.

We are going to introduce more marketing initiatives and engage more people in the marketing area. We are trying to devise ways to bring people to the stadium but clubs and the media need to be involved.

They should not leave this to the FA alone to handle.

The First Capital Premier League is currently on a break and will resume on the 6th of September.
