EC Ready For Akwatia Election Tuesday

The Electoral Commission says all is set for the Akwatia election re-run slated for Tuesday, August 18. In spite of concerns over security in the area following violent clashes between supporters of the NPP and NDC, the EC says ballot papers have been dispatched to the constituency and that the poll scheduled to take place at six polling stations will come off. Public Relations Officer of the EC, Mr Christian Owusu Parry told Joy news the EC's staff to manage the process have adequately been trained. When his attention was drawn to meetings by security managers on the elections, he said the EC had not received any correspondence from national security. The plans to conduct the elections therefore remain intact, he observed. Mr Owusu Parry insinuated it could be late to postpone the elections. Let us remember the election is only tomorrow and the people need to be well informed ahead of time whether it is coming off or not; as we speak now we havent had any correspondence from the national security dealing with the situation on the ground. We think that running elections in six polling stations is something that the security agencies can provide adequate security for, he explained. Violence over the weekend at Akwatia has led to calls for a postponement of the polls. But the two main political parties, NPP and NDC unanimously rejected the proposals saying there was no reason why the security agencies could not provide the needed security for the elections.
