Attorney-General Goes To Court To Quash Gun Man Sentencing

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, has filed an application at the Accra High Court seeking to set aside a judgment of the circuit court that sentenced Charles Antwi to 10 years in prison, it has been reported.

Antwi had appeared on the charge of illegal gun possession, after he was arrested at an Assemblies of God Church normally attended by President John Mahama and Chief Justice Georgina Wood in Accra.

While in court, Antwi confessed to acquiring the gun with a view to killing the President and was sentenced, but the ruling was met with outrage by some members of the public who questioned the sanity of the suspect.

The state is moving for a re-trial on the grounds that the trial judge, Justice Francis Obiri, erred in his judgment because there was an error on the face of the record, Accra-based Citi FM reported Thursday.

The state is further asking for a retrial and a thorough examination of the convict, according to the report.
