Water Shortage Hits Jomoro

Water shortage has hit Elena, a farming community in Tikobo No 1 in the Jomoro District in the Western region.

According to the residents of the community they have never tasted pipe-bone water in their lives and that the only source of water was the Aboto River which they intimated was not suitable for human consumption.

Speaking to Today in an interview some members of the community said “the streams were their only source of water but it was the same streams that they use as a passage to their various farms and other places, and wash in the same water as well.”

They added that any time it rained; it caused erosion whiles unwanted materials were collected into the stream hence making it unhygienic for drinking.

They also indicated that they did not have any alternative source of drinking water but to drink the same water adding that the unhygienic stream poses health threat with disease such as cholera, Bilharzia among others.

Another problem facing the Elena community, apart from the lack of water, the residents said, was a place of convenience and a dumping site for their refuse.

To this end, they appealed to government to come to their aid and provide them with potable water, place of convenience and a refuse dump site.
