Bad Conditions Of Trotros And Injury Risks

Commercial bus drivers on the Ashaiman, Tema and Kpone road do not keep their vehicles in good shape, putting the health and safety of passengers at risk. These drivers care very little about the state of their vehicles, both internal and external, except how much money they can squeeze from the poor passengers. The seats of their vehicles are usually torn with the metal parts exposed, and if one does not take care when entering and sitting, the person could easily be injured by the exposed metal. With some, the electrical wiring under the dashboard are exposed. According to a Madam Sophia Adotey, a trader, she once took one of these commercial buses, and since it was a bit hot, she decided push aside the glass to let in some fresh air. Unfortunately, because the bus was in bad shape, and while she was pushing the glass to make way for ventilation in the bus, the glass fell to the ground breaking into pieces. She said the driver stopped the car and attacked her, asking her to buy a new one and fix it. Due to the aggravating manner of the driver, she agreed to go with the driver to her house and get the money to fix it. On these three roads, it is common to see vehicles without a side mirror or having cracked ones. The absence of the side mirror makes them unable to see the vehicles coming from behind, sometimes causing accidents, coupled with noisy horn blowing all over. Even though they pass through police barriers, their vehicles are hardly noticed by the police, who mostly concentrate on overloading of passengers and baggage, and the wearing of seat belts. Sometimes when these drivers realise that their cars are really in bad shape and with the possibility of being arrested by the police, they pass through back routes, avoiding known police check points.
