Ex-state Guards Fume Over Dismissals

The National Security's directive dismissing bodyguards of ex-government functionaries, numbering 30 has riled one of the affected, Elvis Afriyie. Elvis Afriyie remains shocked with the reasons given by the security body. The affected bodyguards served former President J.A Kufuor, Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the former Speaker of Parliament Begyina Sekyi-Hughes and other state officials. Elvis, who guarded former President Kufuor and the rest were appointed in 2001 when the New Patriotic Party assumed office but had no prior working experience with the Police or Military. But the dismissed officers are demanding answers about why their duties to the State have ended with the coming of a new administration. I was assigned to protect the former president in the name of the state, not for the NPP government or NDC government, disappointed Elvis told an Accra-based radio station, Joy FM. I work for the state to protect the president so I dont see why my appointment should be terminated, he said. It is unclear how bodyguards for President Mills and his Vice were also hired. Although their Aide de Camps are from the police and military, the bodyguards worked with them during the campaign for president.
