The re-constituted Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), chaired by Mr Paul Victor Obeng, was on Friday inaugurated in Kumasi.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Chancellor of the University, and Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, the Vice-Chancellor, are among the new 20-member Council, made of representatives of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), KNUST Alumni and Convocation as well as Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG).
Mr Justice Frank Amoah, Supervising High Court Judge of Kumasi, who swore them into office, urged the members to show genuine commitment to duty and work hard to overcome the challenges of infrastructure, financing, logistics, quality of life and effectiveness of programme.
They should bring their rich experience in life and the academic field to bear on the administration and development of the university, since the Council was the highest decision-making body of the institution.
Mr Justice Amoah noted that, human resource development of the nation was important for the effective utilization of state resources.
He said the KNUST had come a long way in the development of science and technology and that it behoved on the Council to liaise with the Management to source for funds to enhance academic work and overall progress of the Faculties.
The Supervising High Court Judge drew the attention of the members to the need to make sure that they worked with unity of purpose for the achievement of the Council�s set goals.
Professor Adarkwah said he was confident the Council would use its ingenuity to help improve on the working conditions of Faculty members.
This, he said was necessary to the lecturers and discourages them from leaving to seek greener pastures.
Mr Obeng pledged the Council�s resolve, to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them and turn KNUST into a �Centre of Excellence� in science and technology education.
