Govt Has List Of All Appointed 30% MMDA Members Minister

It has emerged that all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have submitted names of appointees to government thereby giving clearance to the inauguration of the MMDAs. A local governance expert, George Kyei Baffour has described the said inauguration as illegal following what he referred to as the absence of appointees who constitute 30 percent of the MMDAs composition. But speaking on Eyewitness News, Deputy Local Government Minister, Emmanuel Agyekum stated that the list of appointees have been submitted to the ministry by the various MMDAs hence their decision to go ahead with the inauguration of the assemblies. What I will say is that the various assemblies have actually come out with the 30 percent that are supposed complemented by the elected members who will be sworn in tomorrow, he said. The Minister also indicated that his outfit had given ample time to the various MMDAs to submit the list of appointees. This was in contrast to reports that the local government ministry was yet to receive the list of appointees. It has been done long time the ministry sent the guidelines to the various MMDAs for them to submit the list so as far as I am concerned, it is ready and we are set for the inauguration tomorrow, the Minister added. Meanwhile the Minister has also revealed that the work of the various assemblies have been greatly affected by the litany of court processes that has characterized the conduct of processes to elect new assembly members to assist the various MMDCEs in the operations. It has affected the assembly level very much in that we have a timetable that enables us to conduct elections every four years to get member s to assist in the administration of the various MMDAs. But there came a time that we were not able to do that because of the legal issues, indeed we have been affected, Mr. Agyekum stated.
