Conditions at the structure continue to worsen with the latest electricity setback. The estate manager of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Eric Nkansah says the entity is still battling to settle outstanding electricity fees to restore power to the Accra Sports Stadium. The facility has been without power supply since August after being disconnected by the Electricity Company of Ghana for a default in bills payment. �From 2014 until now, we owe over GH� 240,000 and the electricity company is demanding that at least half of the amount is paid for the light to be restored,� Nkansah told StarrFM. �We can�t afford to pay this amount through internally generated funds since government subventions are not enough. �But we hope to overcome this predicament soon if private entities come and hire the place for events.� The stadium, in general, has seen little in terms of maintenance since its refurbishment for the hosting of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. From issues ranging from non-functional scoreboards, faulty floodlights, roofing, to seats, there have been calls for the facility to be given an urgent facelift, and issues of electrical supply have only further buttressed reports of its worsening condition. Meanwhile, Goal understands the Ministry of Youth and Sports has received a report from the Architectural and Engineering Service Limited towards an imminent renovation of the edifice. Sources say the Ministry is unhappy with the current state of the stadium and that plans are underway for a major refurbishment. The venue was the centre of attraction when Ghana hosted Mauritius in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June.
