Power Supply To Koforidua Poly Restored

Power Supply to the Koforidua Polytechnic has been restored five weeks after disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The ECG on August 25, 2015 disconnected power supply to the administration block over GH¢759,000.00 debt.

The disconnection exercise affected administrative and other academic exercises which compelled the Students’ Representative Council to demonstrate against the power cut and served notice to stage a major demonstration targeted at the ECG regional office for defying Cabinet’s directives which ban utility providers from disconnecting utility services to essential institutions.

Checks by the DAILY HERITAGE indicate that power supply to the administration block was restored on Friday evening.

The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Ms Mary Eshun-Oppong confirmed to the DAILY HERITAGE that the institution has made part payment and a roadmap has been agreed to clear the rest of the debt.

“Power supply has been restored-somewhere last week, they came to make some payment and we have to restore power to them, the remaining debts would be paid in installments.”

She, however, added that the company would advice itself if the institution fails to honour the terms of payment of its debts.

Management of the institution has served notice to go for a bank loan to service the huge outstanding debt which is expected to be paid by government.

The Rector of Koforidua Polytechnic, Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE on the sidelines of the 4th Staff and 2nd Long and Dedicated Service Award ceremony on Friday in which 22 staff members of the Polytechnic were awarded, stated that “we are at the end of solving the problem, yesterday, we met the regional minister and the Polytechnic and ECG officials and we came up with amicable solution to the problem.”

The rector was, however, unhappy with media reportage which painted a gloomy picture that management is considering closing down the institution due to the power cut.

“While acknowledging the contribution of our friends in the media to our growth, we plead with them to crosscheck every piece of information received with the Public Relations Office before dissemination. In fact, Koforidua Polytechnic has not been closed down and will not close down for any reason.”
