Two Remanded Over Narcotic Drug Peddling

Two persons caught at Agogo in the Asante-Akim North District with substances suspected cannabis were on Tuesday put before the Agogo Circuit Court.

Kwabena Boahen and Adwoa Mary, were ordered to be held in police custody after they both pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The pair would make their next appearance on Wednesday, October 28.

Police Detective Inspector Thomas Buor told the court, presided over by Mr. Fredrick Tetteh, that their arrest was based upon intelligence.

Boahen operates a drinking spot, while Mary runs a chop bar, all at Agogo-Bontodiase.

The police gathered that the two were engaged in the hard drugs trade and moved in to search their work places on October 7.

The prosecution said a plastic container filled with dried leaves, believed to be cannabis, and laced with akpeteshie (a local liquor), was found hidden under the counter of Boahen’s drinking spot.

The accused readily admitted ownership of the drink, properly referred to as “lacka” and told the police that he prepared it himself to sell to his customers.

Mary, who has also been trading in the illegal liquor, on hearing of the police presence in the area, quickly packed her stock and tried unsuccessfully to hide these in an abandoned kiosk.

Samples of the stuff had been sent for laboratory examination.
