Govt Agencies Owe ECG GH18m

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has embarked on massive disconnection exercise in Takoradi in the Western region to recover debts owed it by government institutions and consumers.

The ECG’s major challenge in recent times has been its inability to boost revenue. Government agencies are currently indebted to the ECG in the region to the tune of GH¢18,001,922.65.

The defaulting institutions include Essipon Sports Stadium, which owes GH¢398,871.97; Takoradi Hospital, which owes GH¢1,356,317.93; Effia Nkwanta Hospital, GH¢629,076.21 and Sekondi Naval Base, GH¢3,848,622.89.

The rest are Takoradi Air Force Base, GH¢2,659,693.78; 2nd Battalion of Infantry, GH¢4,315,048.21; Tarkwa Government Hospital, GH¢1,198,245.09; Ministry of Defence, GH¢2,643,100.97 and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), GH¢1,351,817.57.

The Western Regional Commercial Manager of ECG, Alex Anwobor indicated that the management and board of ECG were determined to collect all monies to ensure survival of the company.

“A taskforce has therefore been set up to collect every pesewa owed the utility company. The taskforce is also to ensure that there are enough cash payment points at all operational areas of the ECG.”

It is however unclear why state institutions continue to owe the ECG huge amounts of money, because the company claims that it has installed prepaid meters in 80 percent of offices belonging to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
