Galamsey Operator Jailed For Carrying Firearms

An Accra Circuit Court has convicted Daniel Adjei, a galamsey operator to four months imprisonment in hard labour for possession of a firearm without permit.

He was also to pay a fine of GH₵ 3,600 or in default serve additional two years in prison with hard labour.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abraham Annor told the court that the complainant is a police officer at the National Highways Patrols Unit.

He said the convict is a galamsey operator at Ankaase but lives in Accra New town.

DSP Annor said on September, 21, 2014 at about 03:00 hours, the complainant and his team on patrol mounted a snap check on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

He said the team stopped an Accra-Kumasi bound VIP bus with registration number GT3998-12 for routine check.

The prosecution said in the course of the check, a locally made pistol plus two live ‘BB’ cartridges were found in the bag of the convict.

DSP Annor said the convict was arrested as he could not produce any permit but he maintained that a friend left it with him five years ago.

The Prosecution said the convict said he had since lost contact with the friend and could not trace him.
