Public Warned Against Use Of Military Uniforms

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned the people who use military uniforms to perpetrate criminal acts, to desist form the practice.

It said recent reports in the media showed increasing use of such uniforms, which criminals wear and pose as military personnel and engage in robbery, fraud, illegal small scale mining and extortion, thereby denting the image of the GAF.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations of the GAF, Colonel E. Aggrey-Quashie, said it was putting in more stringent measures to curb the proliferation and the use of military uniforms by criminals.

“As a beginning, GAF has put in place punitive actions against military personnel who dispose their uniforms without authority. Additionally, the military is working with other security agencies to curb the sale and use of the uniforms and similar types by miscreants,” it said.

The statement said the situation had been compounded with music artistes, film actors, event organizers and other entertainers using military uniforms.

“The GAF wish to remind the public that the use of military uniforms and other accoutrements by civilians is prohibited under “Restriction on Use of Military uniforms and Equipment Decree, 1967 (NLCD 177)”. The said decree provides in part that no person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment or accoutrements unless the person is a member of the GAF,” it said.
