Chief and 15 others in court for unlawful damage

The Bibiani circuit court has adjourned to September 16 a case in which the Omanhene of Sefwi-Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Nana Yaw Gyebi II, is standing trial with 15 others for threat of death and causing unlawful damage. They face additional charges of abetment of crime and forcibly releasing a suspect from lawful custody. The accused have all pleaded not guilty and have each been granted bail in the sum of GH6,000.00 with a surety to be justified. The adjournment of the case followed the failure of three of the accused persons, Kwaku Eluo, Kwaku Bernie and Yaw Mensah to appear before the court. The case of the prosecution is that on the eve of the New Year, in 2004, the Bibiani police had information that a group of men armed with guns and other offensive weapons and led by Nana Gyebi, were demolishing a block of stores at Degede, a suburb of Bibiani. The property was at the lintel level. A team of policemen was dispatched to the scene and on arrival found that the entire block had been levelled. The police arrested one of the suspects and kept him in custody to assist in investigations. But Nana Gyebi led the other accused persons to the Bibiani Police Station and forcibly released the suspect from police custody.
