Teachers Vacate Post, Traders Take Over School

TEACHERS AT Tsakatsakam Primary School in the Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region have vacated their post since school re-opened compelling the Traditional Authority to close down the school.

The lack of mobile network coverage, water and electricity, as well as access to transportation is believed to have necessitated the decision by teachers.

The teachers complained about the impact of hiring Okada to school every day from Nsutapong using their meager resources. They also complained about lack of basic amenities in the community which makes life unbearable for them to stay and teach the children.

Due to the vacation of post, the traders have now taken over the well-built classroom as a resting and packing place for their goods.

Tsakatsakam is a garden egg farming community located in a remote area of Yilo Krobo and due to the closure ,children of school going age who are unable to trek long distances to school at Nsutapong are sitting at home without schooling. Others have also taken to the selling of garden eggs.

Parents in the community are furious over the actions of the teachers and are calling on the Ghana Education Service to intervene since it is affecting their children.

The parents alleged that the teachers for some years now have been truant and after weeks of absenteeism, they return to mark registers to cover days they were absent in classrooms and sometimes only return to conduct examination for the pupils and vacate them.

The chief of Tsakastakam community, Jonathan Tetteh Williams, told the DAILY HERITAGE that the attitude of the teachers over the years has led to poor performance of school pupils. He said several complaints to the district education director and authorities concern yielded no results.

The Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, Lawyer Kofi Amoatey, who was coincidentally met using one of the classrooms for meeting National Democratic Congress members said his attention was drawn to the problem during the meeting.

He, however, blamed the District Education Director for the problem. He said, the education director who is fully aware of the problem should have remedied the situation.
