350 Workers Demand 6-Month Salary Arrears -Owed By Better Ghana Management Services Limited

Over 350 ex-workers of the now defunct Better Ghana Management Services Limited (BGMSL) are demanding the payment of over GH¢612,000 owed them as salary arrears.

The amount is an accumulation of five-month salaries ranging between October 2013 and February 2014.

BGMSL, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Company Limited, in August 2012 contracted 350 workers to operate as Health Promotion Assistants and Health Promotion Officers to promote health education in the country.

A Health Promotion Assistant at the time with BGMSL, Mr Abdulai Sualah told The Finder that their contracts were terminated in February 2014 with salary arrears of at least five months.

He explained they received a monthly salary of GH₵350 each; therefore an amount GH₵1,750 is owed each of them.

According to Mr Sualah, all efforts to get their arrears paid have proven futile.

He continued that the accountant, together with the operations manager, whom they worked closely with, have not been able to give them any tangible reason why the arrears have since not been cleared.

He said, close to two years since the contract was terminated, it has been a been a herculean task trying to get a response to their arrears collection as the accountant and the operations manager of BGMSL failed to do something about it.

But in July this year, upon further persuasions, he said a meeting was arranged between them and the accountant, during which it was concluded that their complaints would be forwarded to the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joseph Siaw Agyapong, and that they should be on standby for the outcome of that.

Since that meeting, Mr Sualah said they have not heard anything convincing from the management rather than the usual tossing.

Management of BGMSL could not be reached for comment.

However, The Finder understands that BGMSL is owed millions of cedis by the government, making it difficult for the company to pay the retrenched staff.
