Court Jails Drivers Mate For Robbery

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Ishmael Abisiru, a driver’s mate, to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

The court after a full trial found Ishmael guilty of the offence and was equally convicted.

Delivering, the judgement, the judge Mr Aboagye Tandoh said the assertion by the convict that he knew nothing about the crime committed leaves much to be desired.

He said the convict was not a credible person per the inconsistency in his evidence to the court, adding that the prosecution led sufficient evidence against the convict, which warranted his conviction.

“It is for this reasons that I find the convict guilty of conspiracy and robbery,” he added.

Presenting the facts earlier, prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kwaku Bempeh told the Court that the complainant in the case is a Banku seller.

He said on October 21, at about 02:00 hours, the complainant and the son closed from their shop and were on their way home, when they saw two boys coming towards them.

He said the two boys got closer and pulled out cutlass and threatened to kill the complainant and her son, if they refuse to surrender all their monies and mobile phones to them.

The prosecution said the complainant asked the son to give her hand bag containing a mobile phone and cash in the sum of GH₵ 700.00 to the boys.

“Not satisfied, Ishmael conducted a search in the complainant son’s pocket and found his Motorola phone and cash of GH₵250.00 and bolted with the items,” he added.

DSP Bempeh said in the morning, the complainant narrated the case to a taxi driver, who led them to a popular drinking bar, where the youth with questionable characters used to hangout and Ishmael was seen there.

He said a complaint was made to the police and quickly, he was apprehended and when questioned, he admitted and led the police to the bar, where he handed over the Motorola phone and a cash of GH₵65.00 to the police.

In his caution statement, the convict admitted the offence and mentioned one Bellem, who is at large, as an accomplice.
