NDC Retains Amenfi West Seat

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Amenfi West constituency, Eric Afful has emerged the winner of the by-election held on Tuesday.

The 41-year old Economist polled 15,809 votes while his close contender from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Paul Derkyi, 43, a lawyer polled 13,076.

The two other candidates, Messrs Abraham Kwadwo Buadee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Elvis Adjei of the United Freedom Party (UFP) polled 1,032 and 113 respectively.

The Amenfi West constituency in the Western Region became vacant following the death of the NDC's Member of Parliament for the area, John Gyetua in October this year.

Until the NPP won the seat through a by-election held on April, 24, 2003 due to the resignation of the then NDC MP, Abraham Kofi Asante on March 26, 2003, Amenfi West was a safe seat for the ruling party.
