Damba Festival Cancelled

The Regent of Dagbon and Acting President of the Regional House of Chiefs, His Majesty Kampakuyana-Na Yakubu Andani Abdulai has cancelled the celebration of this year's Damba Festival within Yendi Township.

According to him, the action was necessitated as a result of the difficult circumstances Dagbon finds itself.

In a statement issued through His Lawyer, Issah Mahmud he indicated that the "Damba festival cannot be celebrated when the very foundation of the customs and traditions are being destroyed on the basis of convenience and peace, irrespective of its far reaching repercussions on the Dagbon Kingdom"

He has further noted that "the festival cannot be celebrated when certain fundamental aspects of the customs and traditions have been taken for granted by the powers that be without any justification"

His Majesty has further opined that even though he has decided not to take part in this year`s Damba for which reasons Nanima are apparently abreast with the difficulties facing Dagbon as a people especially in the forward match towards finding lasting peace and justice is being threatened at this materials moment but those revered Nanima who wish to celebrate Damba in their respect Traditional Areas are permitted.

There has been a hullabaloo within the Andani family triggered by a statement by the Gulkpe-Naa, the overlord of Tamale to the effect that the Family will resist attempts by the Otumfour Committee and government to perform the funeral rites of some two Dagbon Chiefs.
