Gitmo Ex-Detainees Saga: Hanna Tetteh Opens Up

Our security forces and agencies are capable of handling it. These people are not going to be a threat to the people of Ghana," says Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh.

The Foreign Affairs Minister was speaking to the issue of the two Guantanamo Bay ex-convicts who are currently in the country.

There has been public outcry about government's decision to accommodate the two terror suspects who have ties to terrorist groups.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked the ruling government to be transparent and accountable to Ghanaians as far as the Gitmo ex-convicts are concerned.

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr and newly elected Chairman of the People's National Convention, Bernard Mornah have condemned the decision to bring the two ex-convicts to Ghana, saying Ghana should allow America to fight their own battles.

Speaking on Accra-based Radio XYZ Monday, Madam Hanna Tetteh said: “we indicated to them that we will be ready to take two. These are the ones that are known and can be managed. There is no need to panic....They asked us for assistance. This assistance is not beyond our capacity to give. It is not putting Ghanaians at risk. It is not going to create a situation where we are attracting hordes of terrorists that these people don’t even know into the country".

Ms. Tetteh added that “throughout the period they are here, they are going to be continuously under surveillance. They know that they being able to leave after two years is dependent on their good behaviour. They were not compelled to come to Ghana. They understand the terms of their arrest. We understand our responsibility. We have the capacity to manage.”
