On Credible Voter Register: Resource NIA

Pressure group, Ghana First Movement (GFM,) has called on government to, as a matter of urgency, put in place the needed mechanisms to ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) provides a credible voter register for the 2016 polls.

That, the GFM asserted, could only be achieved if the government would adequately resource the National Identification Authority (NIA) to aid the EC to produce a flawless register for the upcoming elections.

In a statement issued yesterday in Accra and copied to Today, the group indicated that “Ghana will go through a major event to elect a new government. This activity will prove to the world how sustainable our most touted democratic credential is in the mist of all odds.”

That process, the group in the statement contended, calls for fairness, credibility and trust prior to the preparations towards the elections.

“It is against this backdrop that we call on the government to put in place the needed mechanisms to ensure that the Electoral Commission produces a credible voters register,” the statement said.

The group pointed out that it would not accept any explanation from government why the NIA cannot be resourced to carry out this most important exercise which will be beneficial to “our democratic process.”

“Ghana needs to be peaceful, therefore we stand for peace, work for peace and fight for peace”, the statement concluded.
