Load Management Not Officially Over - Jinapor

The Ministry of Power has stated that although the power situation has improved, leading to the suspension of load management in the last one month, it cannot declare that load management is officially over.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Power, Mr John Jinapor, said, “We cannot declare that load shedding is over yet. We have been able to meet demand but if by accident one plant goes down, especially the big ones, we have a setback.”

He said the Load Management Committee (LMC) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would continue to monitor the situation “to ensure that we sail through and sustain the gains”.
“I would like to put on record that for close to a month now we have not shed load because available capacity has been able to meet the demand. We are, however, aware of isolated outages arising from challenges in the distribution network,” Mr Jinapor said.

Ghana has experienced a load-management schedule, commonly referred to as dumsor for the past three years as a result of a shortfall in the generation of power at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam due to water shortage and at some thermal plants due to inadequate fuel supply.

On December 30, 2015, a statement from the Ministry of Power announced the end of the load management, in line with the promise made by the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, that he would resign if he was unable to end dumsor by the end of 2015.

However, Dr Donkor resigned his position on January 1, 2016 after the release of the statement in what appeared to be disagreement among the energy companies over the end of the load management.

The Chairman of the LMC, Mr William Amuna, said in 2015, significant progress was made towards the expansion in power generation capacity
