Three In Police Grip For Siphoning Fuel At Accident Scene

The Oforikrom Police have arrested three persons for allegedly siphoning diesel from a fuel tanker that was involved in an accident at Anloga Junction in Kumasi in the early hours of yesterday.

The suspects are currently in police custody. They were among residents who rushed to the accident scene to siphon diesel from the tanker when the news broke.

The vehicle fell on a KIA minibus, causing injury to the driver and some of the passengers on board. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Response

The Zongo District Commander, Superintendent of Police Rev. Dr Nyamekye Adane-Ameyaw, said the police responded as soon as they heard about the accident. Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) also responded spontaneously to control the situation.

He said but for their swift response, the situation at the scene could have turned chaotic, since most of the people at the scene were only interested in siphoning fuel, disregarding the danger it posed to their lives.

Superintendent Adane-Ameyaw commended the firefighters who spread foamy chemicals over the spilled oil to prevent it from catching fire.

Concern
The officer expressed concern over the behaviour of some of the residents who did not care about the danger the fallen tanker posed to their lives.

The rush by the people led to heavy traffic between Oforikrom and the Afful-Nkwanta stretch of the Accra-Kumasi main road.

It took personnel from the Fire Service, the National Road Safety Commission and the police about five hours before they were able to empty the fuel from the fallen vehicle into another tanker to clear the road for motorists.
