Organised Labour Demo Underway...With Massive Attendance (PHOTOS)

Organized Labour have made good their promise to hit the streets to demonstrate against the recent hikes in fuel and utility prices with thousands of Ghanaian workers across the country in attendance.

The much publicized protest is to register Organised Labour’s displeasure about government’s refusal to reduce the increase in taxes that have heightened the prices of petroleum products and the cost of utility tariffs.

Since December, water bills have increased by 67.2 percent and power by 59.2 percent, a situation the Trades Union Congress (TUC) says could make life unbearable for the ordinary Ghanaian worker.

The agitated workers also want government to, as a matter urgency, withdraw the recently introduced Petroleum Sector Levy, which has led to 28% increase in petroleum products.

They are hoping Wednesday’s mammoth demonstration would compel government to act.

The aggrieved workers, according to Peace FM’s Greater Accra regional reporter, Akwesi Agyemang converged at the Obra Spot in Circle to start the protest.

Concurrently, reports from the Western, Ashanti, Central and Eastern regions indicates that the workers are demonstrating.

Placard-bearing workers, clad in red and black attire with arm bands to match, have brought activities in Accra, the capital city and some other regional capitals, virtually to a standstill due to heavy vehicular traffic.

Eastern Regional correspondent at Koforidua, Michael Akrofi gave the picture on how government workers in the Eastern region are prepared – “You could see from their faces they are frustrated. The workers' placards are interesting, some are abusive and others sending a message to the president.”
